Yesterday I joined Sustainable Kingston's Pitch-In Kingston initiative to help clean up the area around Kingston West Family Chiropractic . As a chiropractor, I viewed this as the perfect opportunity to demonstrate the Ontario Chiropractic Association (OCA) "Plant and Rake without the Ache" principles in action.
To maintain spinal health during the cleanup, I began with a dynamic warm-up walk to prepare my muscles. While collecting litter, I utilized a grip-and-grab tool to ensure a neutral spine and avoid repetitive bending. When moving heavier bags, I followed the OCA's "Lift Right" advice: pivoting my feet instead of twisting my torso and using my legs to power each movement. Navigating uneven terrain also required stable hiking shoes for proper joint support. By blending community service with these professional guidelines, I was able to contribute to a cleaner Kingston while prioritizing the same musculoskeletal safety I advocate for my patients every day.
